We took these photos on September seventh, a little more than a week before we left home for Athens. That date feels like a lifetime ago. Our days in Greece, which we knew could never really be enough, flew by at an alarming speed. (Although if you were following all of my Athens stories on Instagram, I know it may not have felt that way!) Just like that, we’re home again, and tomorrow, I’ll be back to work.

Our return home was inevitable, of course – the end of a vacation is a certainty from the moment it begins. But I can’t help but wish that the most wonderful moments in life weren’t the ones that pass by almost in a blink, while the mundane ones spent responding to unnecessary emails seem to drag on for days.

None of this is to say that our vacation was perfect. Athens, as I’ve written before, is a wildly imperfect and often chaotic place. In fact, at some moments, our time there might have been described as a comedy of errors. And it ended on a spectacularly low note when I was struck by food poisoning (or some kind of ghastly virus) just as our flight from Montreal to Winnipeg took off. So there was no opportunity to relish the last moments of we’re-on-holiday irresponsibility and order takeout when we got home. And I didn’t get to enjoy my free days post-holiday quite as I planned since I was glued to the sofa sipping ginger ale for half of them.

But none of that matters. Not really, anyway. What matters is that we went. And it was blissfully sunny, and we ate all the baklava and that, in and of itself, made it perfect.

Now that we are home, I’m taking getting back into the swing of things a bit more slowly than I usually do – basically because my body forced my hand suggested I need to relax. But it won’t last. We have a trip to New York scheduled in November, and as much as I can recognise the comforts of home in certain respects when I’m here, it’s really only getting away that allows me to properly appreciate them. (And, let’s face it, reminds me that working is a necessary evil if I want to go on gallivanting all over the world having fun.)

I hope you’ve all been while I’ve been away. I’ve been catching up on posts from my fellow bloggers these past few days, but I’d love to hear how this month has been treating you all. Lately, I find I really miss the more substantive conversation and connection that comes from blogging rather than using instagram. So tell me, what have you been up to while I’ve been away?

Isn’t it strange how time away goes so quickly? I never quite understand how that works. Still, it seems your stay in Greece was wonderful, and already having your next trip to look forward to has to make the return at least slightly easier. I’m with you on missing the relationships with bloggers through blogs. I don’t care to listen to instagram stories talking into the camera, I will skip over them so quickly. I want blog posts written with care and intention, that I can come back to again and again over the years because in some ways they represent as much of a moment in my life as they do for their author.

I’m so sorry you got hit with food poisoning (or something equally unpleasant) – what an end to your trip! But I do hope you have a lovely time nonetheless (I’ve loved seeing all your Instagram images).

  3. So true how all the truly fun & delightful moments fly on by and the mundane just drags. Sigh!! Like your trip to Van and our Skype chats… they just go too quickly, but then again, that’s what makes them so fun & lovely too!! Can’t wait to hear more about your trip and wishing you all the best on your first day back at work! Plus hello, blazer!!! SO lovely seeing it on the blog – what a great addition to your wardrobe!! xo

I was following along on Instagram and I thought your trip seemed to go by quickly too!
