Location: Rue des Frères – Strasbourg, France

Strasbourg, May 30, 2023

Dear friends,

I have nothing to protest personally. But I titled this letter the way that I did because we found ourselves in the middle of a protest while snapping these photos. Unlike in most French cities, where you can simply close your eyes, spin around twice and point to land on a beautiful location, we struggled to find places free of clutter that would make a good background for photos in Strasbourg. We’d been wandering purposefully but unsuccessfully for at least fifteen minutes when we finally stumbled across this seemingly quiet corner where rue des Frères meets rue du Dome. We snapped away quite happily for about thirty seconds before crowds of people began to rush between us.

Where was everyone suddenly going, we wondered. And why were they all coming this way?

The sound of whistles and drums became audible a moment later. There was a protest happening. And our little corner was right on the marching route.

We never did figure out what was up for protest that evening. After the little tourist train, which normally toodles along through the city centre at about fifteen kilometres an hour, rushed past us at high speed, we decided it was time to get a move on, photos or no photos. It was becoming apparent by this point in what was only our first day in the city that Strasbourg had plans for us that differed from our own and that, despite my natural stubborn desire to fight it, I wouldn’t win even if I tried.

We managed to get our shots either way. The protest went on, and so did we. That’s the way life goes, and time, too. It’s always moving forward, no matter what our plans are, and I suppose our stay in Strasbourg served as a good reminder of that.
