I confess: the first luxury handbag I coveted was not the Chanel classic flap. It was not the first luxury handbag that I bought and still love dearly, the Louis Vuitton Speedy 25. Nothing so classic. In my teens, I wanted to try everything, to wear every style once until I figured out what suited me. And I was convinced that a Dior saddlebag would go with them all.
When I look back, I have no idea what made the Dior saddlebag seem so appealing, apart from its popularity and constant appearance in ads in my favourite magazines. I know how to ride a horse, but equestrian-inspired fashions have never held much appeal for me. And while I do like handbags on the smaller side, I don’t like tassles or embellishments or, generally, unconventional shapes. None of that mattered, at the time – I loved the Dior saddlebag until it went out of fashion, when, like any fickle teen fashionista, I promptly forgot about it entirely.
I laughed, when Dior rereleased the saddlebag this year. And then I texted my girlfriend, whose love of the style is genuinely eternal. I know my own style now, and a saddle-shaped handbag isn’t likely to ever be the right choice for me. But the return of the iconic Dior-print fabric reignited a long-forgotten spark in my fashion-loving heart, and I found myself quietly searching online to see what vintage bags might be out there. Mostly, I came up empty-handed. And then, seemingly out of nowhere, an adorable little Dior bag popped up at my favourite local luxury resale shop, So Over It. I make an effort to consign more pieces at So Over It than I purchase there, but sometimes, when you love something, you just know – and I loved this bag. So much that I bought it the day I saw it pop up on their Instagram stories.
The fact is, I wouldn’t have worn a Dior bag nearly as well if I actually had it when I was a teenager. Most often, good things really are worth waiting for – for so many different reasons. But since my teenaged handbag dream has officially come true, I’m curious; what was the first luxury bag you really loved? And do you still love it now?
I think my first love was a Chanel bag when I was about 12 – and I admit to still loving the design, although I’ve never made much of an effort to actually acquire one. Someday…

Oh my gosh, YES, I remember my “first bag love” so fondly, it was the classic Chanel flap bag and I wore it everywhere. I was modelling back then + went to school in the British Properties… so I fit right in. Then in my early 30’s I lent it to my mom and you know this story right?! She has no idea what happened to it… she thinks it got lost when they moved. My heart still aches when I think about it! Anyways I digress, I LOVE your Dior find and I’m definitely a saddle bag girl at heart + this one is truly a thing of beauty, and speaking of beauty, love, love this outfit so much!! xo
first, ‘so over it’ is the best name I’ve ever heard for a consignment shop, and second, sometimes having the piece we once coveted is the best feeling, our past and present selves having a moment to appreciate where we were and where we are. It’s a gorgeous bag, and I hope it brings you joy and never ends up back at So Over It!
Totally agree, some things are worth waiting for, you enjoy them more.
My first “luxury bag” bag was a Tous hobo bag I paid about 800.00 USD for it. The second one vintage Gucci.
