I never could learn to like coffee. I tried to start drinking it when I was seventeen, because everyone around me either already drank it or was starting to at the same time. That misadventure lasted about three months. I drank about three cups one early morning in September when I had to appear on the local news for work. I had a cup or two at Christmas brunch In between, probably one or two more. But I never loved it. And I never missed it when I didn’t drink it. I grew up with tea and, later that year, started drinking it when everyone else had coffee. It was the beginning of a love affair that has gone on ever since.

Being a tea drinker is not always easy. In Vancouver, it was simple enough. In Paris, however, tea is still considered a luxury drink. You can get an incredible cup, particularly at Mariage Freres, but even the mediocre ones can set you back five or six euros at a cafe. So when we got back to Winnipeg this summer, I looked forward to enjoying affordable and enjoyable tea in coffee shops again. Imagine my surprise, then, when I discovered that the tea here is mostly terrible.

I don’t say that lightly. I order a cup of tea almost everywhere I go – and I have been on a mission to discover as many new restaurants and cafes as possible since our arrival. Unfortunately, almost all of them serve the same brand of Earl Grey, my habitual tea choice. I don’t know the brand name, because I’ve had to reason to ask – I would never seek it out on my own. What I do know is that it invariably tastes soapy, the mixture of leaves filled with too much cornflower and not enough bergamot. I could list the places that serve it. I won’t, but I could – my most recent disappointment came at a new-to-me coffee shop just two days ago and every time, it’s a little worse. The thing is, I want to love cute local places, but I can’t love anywhere that serves bad tea.

Luckily, the one coffee shop that does serve decent tea is just a few minutes from my apartment. Little Sister isn’t just cutely decorated, although that doesn’t hurt, I admit – their tea is perfect and, in my eyes, that makes them perfect.

I suspect most of you are coffee drinkers. But tell me – can any of you commiserate with my search for the perfect cup of tea?

  1. I never would have imagined finding a decent cup of tea would be so challenging. Granted I’m a coffee drinker who rarely indulges in tea (the exception is Scottish breakfast tea – I always have a box on hand at home and have a cup every week or so), but still I really never would have guessed. I hope the situation improves for you because I’m sure that must be frustrating!

  2. I’m definitely a tea drinker, but always make it home and then take it with me, for walks, drives, ect. I love rooibos tea with honey and a little bit of foamy vanilla soy milk + a sprinkle of cinnamon. It’s SO good!! And I love that you found the perfect spot, the decor is so darling, plus such a bonus it’s a short distance from your home too. Happy Friday, Cee. Getting so excited for our phone date!!! xo

  3. I’m more of tea drinker as well. I drink coffee only occasionally. But I love hot chocolate. Great pics of you Cee! Love your outfit.

Ah Cee, this post made me chuckle. Why is a nice cup of tea so difficult?! Lol
I’m definitely a coffee drinker but theres nothing like a nice leisurely cup of tea, from a tea pot.
I’m still on the hunt for our perfect rose gold tea pots 🙂

I am a social coffee drinker. I drink just when people are around. Also weather must be cold, if not I just won’t have it.

  7. I’m a coffee drinker, but I think I would have to try tea at a shop that delightful. How wonderful that it’s so close by!

I also tend to be more of an at home tea drinker. If I have it out, I’ll probably opt for Chai. Any other brew, I’ll have at home, and even then it often reminds me of when I’ve got a cold, since a sure sign of illness in my body is that I wake up and don’t want coffee.

I’m not even 100% sure I love coffee either – I won’t drink it black and when I have it out, it’s often far more about the quality of the frothed milk than anything else. And sadly it will be at least $4-$5 for a cup.

Though If I were in your area, I’d certainly love to stop at Little Sister and try a cup of your favorite.
