I moved out of my parents’ house before I turned twenty. But it wasn’t until I was nearly thirty that I began to give serious thought to home decor. Up to that point, we either decorated our various homes with a hodgepodge of hand-me-downs from family members or, if we were living in Europe, rented them fully furnished. I’ve loved fashion since before I knew the word, but somehow, in my mind, there was a disconnect between personal fashion and fashion at home.
Not anymore. We didn’t initially plan to buy a new home in Winnipeg. But when I saw the type of apartments that were available and realised how little freedom I would have to decorate them, I changed my mind quickly. There’s nothing better than having a space you can truly make your own. However, that doesn’t mean the process of making it your own is easy. Shopping for home decor items is a major stumbling block for me. A furniture purchase is a commitment – and at times, I’m not sure I’ll love something in five minutes, never mind in five years.
We’ve made progress in decorating, despite my hesitance to commit to home decor pieces. I have a new desk in my office, we’ve integrated a dining table that belonged to the previous owner of our home into our space and our new bed frame just arrived yesterday. But we still have a long way to go. And while I’m not sure that any blush pink will actually make it into our apartment, I have been loving the idea of a blush, grey and white colour scheme lately. (I’m not sure I’ll be able to convince Ian this is a good idea. Or that I’ll still love it by next week. So I suppose only time will tell what we actually choose!)
How did you decorate your home?
I really love the pink chair and the mirror.
Oooh, this post has me doing a happy dance. As you know, I love your “shop with Cee” feature… AND to see you’re covering home decor today, is the best thing ever!! I love all your picks + feel they are SO you and I hope they all make their way to your new home. As for adding pink? You could always consider doing cushions. The pink chair is lovely !
Oh, I take forever to decorate. We moved into out last apartment about 7 years ago and I am not done yet… its a mix of antiques with modern. Someday I will finish.
We bought our flat three years ago, and I remember my mum saying, “You’ll live your way into it”. What she meant was that, as we lived there, it would gradually become apparent to us what we needed and wanted. I did make one massive mistake, furniture-wise, though thankfully not a very expensive one – I talked my husband into a huge mirrored coffee table on the West Elm sale. Three years of bumping our knees on this thing, and one of my in-laws breaking part of the mirror surface, it was really starting to lose its charm. But we gave it away to friends (who love it) and bought a smaller one that fits our space much better and has round edges. So my advice would be to take it slowly if you don’t have a 100% clear vision! 🙂
Also, with regards to blush pink – could you add it in the form of cushion covers, blankets, candle-holders or a vase? Stuff like that can always be easily replaced if you decide it’s not working out. Love that mirror though! Very Beauty and the Beast! 😉
Cee, that color scheme sounds so beautiful. I’m in love with that blush chair. How gorgeous! The home decor bit me a year ago after the remodel. I’m just now furnishing my home. I just take it a little at a time. It is a commitment so you want to be careful.

I love these pieces, and I find decorating a space very challenging.
When it comes to clothes, I know I can have many things that don’t go with each other, as I can wear them separately. when it comes to a home, trying to decide if that new thing I love will actually work with my space is completely different.
And I can’t say that I’ve managed to achieve cohesion, but I started out with the idea of Gold, Grey, and white, and through hand-me-downs, craigslist, and one new furniture buy (the couch) I put together my home. I don’t really love the dark mahogany pieces from my grandmother, but after painting one I gave up on the idea painting them all, and while I do love the vintage kitchen table a chairs from craiglist, it’s honey oak top and teal painted chairs don’t really go with anything else…
Still, that mirror is stunning, and reminds me of one my grandma had which my uncle took, and I really do hope that pink chair makes it’s way into your home.
