Today is the big day: we’re moving into our new place! Well, okay, to be totally honest, we only take possession today – most of the moving will probably happen next weekend after everyone is back from celebrating the long weekend. But the point is, after a month back in Winnipeg, we’re starting the process of moving into what will be our permanent home. We’ve bought paint and brushes. We have plans to rip up carpets in the near future. Basically, we’re moving in the right direction: forward.

It all feels very surreal if I’m honest. We took these photos less than a month ago. It was a typical day in Paris for us; we spent the morning at a photo shoot for my friend Hannah’s shop, La Correspondance (which I’ll tell you more about very soon.) Afterwards, we stopped for lunch before taking a walk in Montmartre to find a wall of flamingo graffiti my friend Becky spotted on Instagram. We had that kind of freedom, to simply wake up in the morning and plan our activities as we went. And, more importantly, we felt inspired to discover new things in Paris every day.

A lot can change in a very short time. And very, often, it does. Whereas Winnipeg has more interesting architecture than Vancouver, at least in my opinion, it does not inspire me like the French capital. Nowhere could, really. My days here so far have consisted primarily of working on Coco & Vera, and my next book. (Yes, there really will be a second book eventually.) Occasionally, I reflect on our time in Paris; on wandering charming neighbourhoods, taking photos of graffiti and meeting politely curious French dogs. But mostly, events that are just a few weeks in the past feel like they happened a lifetime ago.

And so, instead, I’m focused on looking forward. We’ve moved a lot in our lifetime together, and particularly in the last three years – our new address will be our fourth in three years. I’m hoping it will be our last for while, but you never know where life may take you. Paris seems far away right now, but that’s okay – I know it will always be there waiting when we can get back, and in the meantime, the future looks pretty good.

So true. You never know where life will take you, but as long as its forward… which is the direction you’re going you’re on the right path.
I remember when we bought our first apartment, I never thought I would ever move from there suddenly a fabulous opportunity came up and we sold and moved to another apartment, always looking to improve.

  6. Moving forward is the only way to go! I’ll never be as inspired here in the Chicago suburbs as I was living in the city or when I was living in more beautiful parts of the country than the Midwest, but I have learned to love things I never thought I would here I am excited for you.

Moving forward always feels so important. We could waste a lifetime looking back. I think it’s great that you are enjoying the idea of being rooted (right now anyway) and I hope you feel happiness in making your new house and city your home. sometimes I wish it were easier to bring the feelings you get while traveling into your everyday life. Being always open to possibility and adventure and satisfying the curiosity of dogs.
