If Cinderella is proof that a pair of shoes can change your life, then Sleeping Beauty is a reminder that you should never underestimate the value of a fabulous dress – no matter what colour it is. I had admired this Self-Portrait dress online for months, but told myself, as I always do, that I didn’t really want it unless it came in black. (It doesn’t.) When I stumbled upon it on super sale at Holt Renfrew, in my size, in December last year, I gave myself permission to at least try it on. I don’t often do that, especially with higher priced items, because to be honest, once I try something on, as long as there are no serious problems with how it fits, it usually winds up coming home with me. That is exactly what happened in the case of this dress, but I have no regrets – while I am all for curating a wardrobe that is functional and effortless, nothing makes me feel more ready to take on the world than a gorgeous dress… even if it doesn’t fit my usual colour palette. When I think about this – when I put on my Self-Portrait dress and look in the mirror – it really makes me wonder how anyone can dismiss fashion as frivolous since it can have such a profound impact on how we feel about ourselves. What clothes make you feel confident?

Okay, this is beyond stunning on you (and I hugely love that you dropped a Sleeping Beauty reference in there). I just can’t get over how elegant this is…and it looks like it fits you like a glove.

  3. I’m glad you got it, because despite not being your trademark black, it was made for you. Absolutely stunning.

Weirdly, overalls make me feel super confident! I wore overalls when I met my husband (and he was in a suit… talk about Dharma and Greg!), and maybe they gave me the confidence to flirt with him/mock his Australian accent? I have long legs so I guess overalls accentuate that in a good way. If only I could get away with wearing overalls to a job interview… 😉

And you know what, totally agree on going outside your colour palette for that one special item – I mean, this dress is stunning on you!

This dress fits so well… it would have been a sin not to buy !
I feel most confident in suits and tailored dresses.

  7. All I want to do is wear impractical clothes and spend oodles of money!! Give me “ALL the pretty things” is my motto these days! My health has been meh, and life is short, so somehow shopping makes all the sense in the world! 😉 And I must say, your dress is exquisite, and while not black, I still feel like it’s such a beautiful classic! Both the colour and the lace are timeless and incredibly elegant + who the heck can say no to a fab price point as well!! xo

PS – Thanks again for the Prague snap, can’t wait to see more of your adventures tomorrow!!

There is nothing better than clothes which make you feel fabulous (and nothing worse than clothes that don’t) so those are the ones to fill your closet with. I know you are devoted to your neutrals, but on the rare occasions you’ve done color, I’ve adored it.
