Holiday Cheer at the Magnolia Hotel

Two weeks before Christmas, I’m usually spending most of my time thinking about all of the holiday tasks I have yet to check off my to-do list – while agreeing to attend every imaginable holiday event in order to avoid actually doing any of them. (Procrastinators unite.) But this year, well, this year I have truly left everything until the last minute because we escaped the pre-Christmas madness to spend last weekend in Victoria at the Magnolia Hotel. My last trip to Victoria was in 1986, so I had no idea what to expect from our weekend away, but after a year that I recently described (pretty accurately, I think) as a tornado of events, I was really looking forward to some relaxation and two days at the Magnolia Hotel turned out to be exactly what I needed. We arrived early and our rooms were already prepared for us, which was such a relief after an early morning flight. The hotel is centrally located in downtown Victoria, so after taking some time to decompress and have a cup of coffee, we were able to set out in search of brunch and find all kinds of options nearby – including right downstairs at Catalano, which served a delicious eggs benedict with chipotle hollandaise that I will not soon forget! Brunch is important, but since not everyone is quite as hungry-all-the-time as I am, I think it’s probably a good idea to note we were also within walking distance of the waterfront and the gorgeous historic parliament buildings. Details are so important to me, which is hardly a secret – most of you probably know, but I once bought a black blazer that was identical to one I already owned simply because it had pink silk lining, which no one saw but me, but which made it seem essential to me even so – and that was what I really fell in love with at the Magnolia Hotel: the details. From the softest terry-lined bathrobes to the nightly turndown service (complete with chocolate mints!) to the sweet surprise of Bailey’s and hot chocolate delivered as a festive treat, nothing was left to chance during our stay and those small things are what made the big picture of our stay so bright. One of my favourite moments we spent was on Saturday afternoon in my room with Lyndi; our guys were both temporarily elsewhere so we had an hour to just sit by the window, put our feet up and indulge in a glass of wine with a side of girl talk and it was perfect. There are a lot of changes to come for us in the new year, which makes it hard for me to know if I’ll get back to Victoria anytime soon, but I know that if I do, the Magnolia Hotel will be my first stop.

Deux semaines avant Noël, j’ai l’habitude de passer la bonne partie de mon temps à réfléchir sur toutes les tâches des fêtes toujours non-accomplies – tout en acceptant toutes les invitations qui me sont offertes afin d’éviter de compléter ces mêmes tâches. (Bonjour la procrastination.) Cette année, bon, cette année j’ai vraiment tout laissée à la dernière minute car nous nous sommes réfugiés de la folie des fêtes à l’Hôtel Magnolia à Victoria. Normalement, nous habitons très près de Victoria, mais quand même, la dernière fois que j’y suis partie fut un 1986, donc je ne savais pas à quoi s’attendre, mais après un an plutôt chaotique, j’avais bien envie d’un week-end de détente et deux jours chez l’Hôtel Magnolia, c’était exactement ce dont j’en avais besoin. Nous y sommes arrivés assez tôt, mais nos chambres nous attendaient, chose qui nous a bien soulagé après notre départ matinal. L’hôtel se trouve directement au centre-ville, donc après un café et un moment de relaxation, nous sommes reparties à la recherche du brunch – étant donné l’emplacement de l’hôtel, nous avions plein de choix de restaurants à quelques pas, y incluse dans le foyer, chez Catalano, ou j’ai testé des oeufs Benedict avec une sauce hollandaise à la chipotle qui était absolument à tomber. Le brunch, c’est important, et cependant, je sais que tout le monde ne vise pas à tester le plus de restaurant possible pendant leurs voyages, donc je crois que c’est essentiel de vous signaler que l’hôtel se trouve très proche des quais et du Parlement provincial, aussi. Je prête toujours attention aux détails, comme vous savez – plusieurs parmi vous connaissent probablement l’histoire de mon achat d’une veste noire, identique à une veste noire que j’avais déjà dans mon placard, fait à cause d’une doublure en satin rose; personne ne l’a vu sauf moi, et pourtant, j’ai craqué pour cette doublure inattendue – et l’Hôtel Magnolia prête autant d’attention aux détails que moi, chose que j’ai beaucoup appréciée. Du peignoir de bain doublé en tissu-éponge au service de couverture le soir (avec des petits chocolats à la menthe posés sur les oreillers,) aux petites attentions, tel le chocolat chaud avec Bailey’s et guimauves, livré comme un petit cadeau festif peu après notre arrivée, tout était impeccable. Mon moment préférée, c’était le samedi après-midi ; nos hommes étaient occupés pendant une heure, donc Lyndi et moi, nous avons pris une petite pause dans ma chambre – avec deux gros fauteuils doux, une bouteille de vin, quelques macarons, une bonne conversation a vite suivi. Je sais que bien de choses vont changer pour moi l’année prochaine, donc je ne suis pas certaine d’exactement quand je vais pouvoir retourner à Victoria, mais lors de mon prochain séjour, c’est chez l’Hôtel Magnolia que je vais réserver encore une fois.
