Seattle is our go-to destination for a weekend getaway. Just two and a half hours south of Vancouver, the city has a familiar feel while still being different enough from home that we feel like we’ve had a holiday. At the very end of last year, we realised we hadn’t been able to make a single trip to Seattle in 2015. It isn’t always easy to find time to getaway with our crazy work schedules, but we’ve made a conscious effort to change that this year. We’ve made two cross-border trips this year, the first in January and the second in May. We were spoiled with beautiful, sunny weather on both occasions, which made the city even easier to love. Seattle has the best fresh flowers of anywhere I’ve been in North America – I picked up the most perfect pale pink peonies on our most recent trip, but no matter what season you visit, you’re guaranteed to find gorgeous (and totally affordable!) bouquets at Pike Place Market. The city is also home to my favourite Nordstrom Rack store, where I’ve found more gems than I can count, most of them marked down by 80% or more. But it’s really the food that stands out in Seattle, at least for me, from the artisan donuts at General Porpoise to the authentic French ambiance (and tastes!) at Le Pichet to the fresh made crumpets at The Crumpet shop. I could go on – people often do go on about the food in Vancouver, but when Seattle restaurants are so nearby, I can’t help by wonder why; our food scene is decidedly dull by comparison. But then again, I suppose it’s possible that the novelty of Seattle is what excites me; I can eat at a Vancouver restaurant any time, but in Seattle I have to choose only best, since I’m not in the city very often. It doesn’t really matter; the simple fact is, if you’re in Seattle, you will not go hungry. If you live in Vancouver, Seattle is the perfect weekend getaway destination, but I think it’s worth visiting from further afield, too – the city has a unique style that is often overshadowed by that of its quirky, Portland, but that, personally, I love better. (And besides, who could resist the thought of those potential deals at Nordstrom Rack!)

  2. Oh my, it’s been way too long since I’ve visited Seattle! Plus, yes with you on the food! There’s so many gorgeous restaurants and fabulous chefs! I could definitley spend the majority of my time eating when visiting Seattle, mind you, that’s what vacations are for! And Nordstrom Rack is sounding SO good right now! xo

There is so much of my own country I have yet to see, and Seattle is still at the top of my list. When food is so often tied to how greatly you enjoy a city, I’m glad to hear Seattle did not disappoint!
