The fashion industry’s top models from South Sudan and Canada are coming together for an evening of fashion and philanthropy. On Tuesday, May 10, The Obakki Foundation is partnering with Holt Renfrew’s H Project for the Walk for Water Benefit. And what does that have to do with me, you might wonder? Actually, it has a lot to me do with me – and all of us. I start every morning with a cup of hot tea. I love long showers. I couldn’t live without my dishwasher – well, okay, I could but I’d complain a lot more. In North America, in my life time, water has seemed to be in never-ending supply. We all indulge in bottles of Evian and relax in bubble baths, taking for granted that our taps will always flow. But in other parts of the world, water – particularly clean water – is a privilege. One of my favourite local brands, Obakki, is working to change that, and fashion is one of their vehicles for change. Obakki the brand makes clothes. Beautiful, covetable clothes. The Obakki Foundation, a registered charity that is their philanthropic counterpart, focuses on providing clean water and education in Africa; they have built more than 810 water wells in South Sudan and built twelve schools in Cameroon. But this is just the beginning. To help support the cause and spread the word, Lyndi from Style Calling and I visited the Obakki studio in Gastown – it was an amazing experience to see how the designs come together and to have a chance to try them on for this photoshoot, which we did on the studio rooftop! The Walk for Water benefit will feature Obakki’s SS16 and FW16 collections, showcased on the runway by international models, including Ajak Deng, Grace Bol, Heather Marks, Achok Majak, and Mari Agory. Guests at the event will also have a chance to hear special guest speakers, including model, DJ and activist Mari Malek (https://vimeo.com/79221556) and Ger Duany, actor and UN Refugee Goodwill Ambassador. Mais autre part dans le monde, de l’eau – surtout de l’eau fraiche et propre – est peu abondant. Une marque locale que j’adore, Obakki, cherche à changer ça à travers la mode. La marque Obakki offre des vêtements – des beaux vêtements que je convoite toujours. La fondation Obakki, une association reconnue d’utilité publique, sert d’équivalent philanthrope de la marque, et se concentre sur offrir de l’eau fraiche et de l’éducation en Afrique. Jusqu’à présent, la fondation a construit 810 puits d’eau à Soudan et douze écoles à Cameroon, et ce n’est que le commencement. Afin d’offrir notre soutien à cette grande cause, Lyndi et moi avons rendu visite à l’atelier Obakki à Gastown – quelle merveille de voir l’endroit où les créations naissent et d’en faire des essayages pour ce shooting, qui nous avons fait sur le toit de l’atelier ! Les collections PE16 et AH16 d’Obakki seront présentées à la soirée caritative walk for Water, mise en valeur sur le podium par des mannequins internationals, y incluse Ajak Deng, Grace Bol, Heather Marks, Achok Majak et Mari Agory. En plus, il y aura deux orateurs invites : la mannequin, DJ et activiste Mari Malek, ainsi que l’acteur et ambassadeur de bonne volonté de l’ONU, Ger Duany.
