We took an early morning train from Penn Station and arrived in Philadelphia around 8:30 am. We arrived just two days before the Pope and even before I knew about his impending visit, I was worried we wouldn’t have enough time to see the city; there are so few places that you can visit effectively in eight hours, but I just keep trying. And, as it turns out, I’ve finally found one. From New York, Philadelphia is the perfect day trip destination. Just an hour and a half south of NYC by train, the city is steeped in history but small enough that we were able to walk from one end of downtown to the other, visiting Independence Hall and two museums on the way, without feeling rushed. And that was just the morning…! Of course because I’m me, and because we were visiting my dear friend Bec who knows my Paris obsession all too well, we included all the most Parisian parts of the city on our tour; the Rodin Museum, City Hall (which was made to look just like the Hotel-de-Ville in Paris) and a delectable lunch at Caribou Cafe, where the crepes were almost as good as in France. Almost. (The bread pudding, on the other hand, was better than any I’ve ever had; I’m still dreaming about it.) But since we love history, we also indulged in some very touristy but utterly essential sightseeing, visiting the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and wandering along the rowhouse-lined streets in the old city. And we even had time to shop; Philadelphia is the home of Anthropologie and their flagship store, in a historic mansion, is a must-see. By the time we boarded the train back to New York, I really felt like we’d seen it all – I didn’t sample a cheesesteak, mostly because I didn’t want to, but my short visit was totally satisfying. The next time you visit New York, I highly recommend a one-day detour to Philadelphia.
Nous sommes montés en train tôt le matin à Penn Station, à direction de Philadelphie. Le voyage ne dur qu’une heure et demie; nous y sommes arrivés à 8h30, deux jours avant le pape. Et même avant que j’ai appris qu’il allait visiter prochainement, je m’inquiétais au sujet de notre séjour, ne sachant pas comment nous pourrions tout voir pendant huit heures. C’est tellement rare qu’on puisse vraiment voir une ville dans un seul jour, mais mes tentatives continuent. Et finalement, j’ai réussi à en trouver une – Philadelphie, c’est la ville parfaite pour une excursion d’un jour. Situé au sud de New York, c’est une ville pleine d’histoire mais assez petite que nous puissions marcher d’un bout du centre-ville à l’autre, arrêtant à Independence Hall et à deux musées, sans nous presser. Et ça ce n’était que le matin…! Étant donné que je suis francophile et que mon amie, Bec, qui nous a rencontré en ville, me connais très bien, nous avons vécu tout ce qui est Parisien à Philadelphie; le musée Rodin, l’hôtel- de-ville (qui ressemble énormément à celui à Paris) et un déjeuner délicieux chez Caribou Café. (Leur pudding au pain, j’en rêve toujours !) Mais étant donné que l’histoire nous passionne, nous avons aussi passé par les lieux touristiques mais néanmoins très importants de la ville; le Liberty Bell, Independence Hall et les maisons mitoyennes de la vieille ville. Nous avons même eu assez de temps afin de faire du shopping; la marque Anthropologie est née à Philadelphie et la boutique phare, dans un hôtel particulier, est à ne pas rater. Lorsque nous sommes remontés en train pour rentrer à New York, j’avais l’impression que nous avons vraiment tout vu – je n’ai pas pris un cheese steak, mais c’est surtout car j’en avais pas envie. La courte journée fut entièrement satisfaisante et je vous conseille fortement de faire un détour vers Philadelphie lors de votre prochaine visite à New York.
