I didn’t want to love J. Crew. I really didn’t. One of my high school friends worked at Gap, and there was something about the way she preached the virtues of argyle and khaki (while absolutely denying that it was even remotely possible that Gap might use factories with poor labour standards, sometimes known as sweatshops, for their manufacturing) that made them decidedly unappealing. J. Crew was her favourite shopping destination across the border and I wanted nothing to do with it… until she dragged me in. It was August 2007 and I will never forget the blue velour blazer that stole my heart. It was out of my price range but I remember it well (and though I later got the black version, it really wasn’t the same.) I’ve been a J. Crew shopper ever since, particularly in the shoe department. The first time I was invited to a J. Crew event as a blogger was a huge moment for me… but still not as big as when the unfathomable happened a few weeks ago. J. Crew, the store whose catalogues I have saved and treasured for nearly ten years, reached out to me and asked if I would like to style a piece from their summer accessories collection. After I recovered from the ensuing heart attack, I responded with an emphatic, “YES!” And a few days later, this beautiful white tote arrived at my door. I’ve never been so happy to see our postal worker (and since he normally just brings me bills, that shouldn’t be surprising.) This beauty is going to be with me all summer – and for many summers to come, too.
