So the saying goes – and although I rarely worry about social convention, when it comes to my travel attire, I like to fit in. Tourists are easy to spot – nowhere is this more poignantly illustrated than in Paris during the month of August, when the elegant French capital is suddenly awash with men in plaid shorts, women in yoga pants and their neon clad children – for all of the wrong reasons. This outfit, which I envisioned before our trip to Rome has even been booked, was inspired by Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday – I couldn’t help myself – but it turned out to make me look more like a local than a vintage film star. I was asked for directions three times, twice by Italian speaking travellers, while I was wearing it. I couldn’t help but be a bit pleased with myself, I must admit. How do you dress when you go on holiday?
I also always like to blend in – I hate being thought of as a tourist! And it just makes me so happy that you dreamed up this outfit before you even went; it's so perfect for Rome.
This skirt is my favourite piece from your wardrobe, Cee! I really love it and no matter how you style it, it looks perfect on you. I also catch myself sometimes dressing for a certain event or location by the people I'm going to meet there. Now due to my holiday in Bulgaria, I almost simplified my style and left lots of the East London pieces back in London ;))
What a beautiful outfit Cee! I hate looking like a tourist when I travel, but the tulle skirt just really takes this to the next level. So elegant, so chic!
These pictures are gorgeous, as are you, Miss Cee! You look so lovely and ethereal, like a wood nymph! How awesome that people mistook you for a local! ~Sara
You look so elegant and beautiful, so very Audrey Hepburn! I am sure you fit right in with the locals in Rome, you definitely have the european look to you m'dear. This skirt is such a gorgeous piece, I really wish I owned something like this! xJennaD
Cee, before I even read your post I said to myself you look like Audrey Hepburn in that first picture! The last picture of you is absolutely MIND BLOWING! You look so gorgeous. Love that skirt! http://www.averysweetblog.com/
Preppy and romantic at the same time. I would put your outfit in thought when I have holiday 🙂 I also want to be chic like that in my travel or as a tourist, depends on the local culture. It's like appreciating the place or country where we have the holiday.
Getting asked for directions while away always brightens my day – even more so when I can actually send them to the right place!
It's also wonderful when you've spent enough time in a city to answer 'oui' when asked 'êtes-vous du quartier?' – must be like that for you in Paris now –
OMG! I knew it! As I said earlier on Instagram when I saw you I instantly thought of Audrey in Roman holiday, now that I read that it was actually inspired in her character, I even like it so much more! You look absolutely darling!
Cee you look absolutely gorgeous! That skirt! It is very different, very unique.
I totally understand about blending in whilst travelling. I love to feel blended in with the crowd, plus I guess it's safer as you're most likely not get mugged? Hahah.
oh Cee, this is the most lovely “Audrey” look ever! perfection of style just breathes through you so naturally. you do look like you fit right into the Roma mode, it's no wonder people came up and asked q's. i'd have thought you were a local if i didn't already know you too 🙂
i bet this photoshoot was all kinds of fun to twirl through, the tutu has got to be my faved component of this look and your own signature style. bravo!!!!! xo ♥
That outfit is the essence of what ladylike is ! Love everybit ! Dressing for holiday's is so much fun but it can be hard to find the balance between confort and style.
before i even read this i thought: oh, so Audrey Hepburn! 😉 i have thoroughly enjoyed this post – such beautiful photos!! as for the dressing when going on hols – you will never see me in yoga pants or similar clothing 😉 i believe you can dress comfortable and still look cool so why not to do so?? 😉 well, done here, Mrs! xoxo
You look so so pretty in this outfit Cee. I would even use the word cute because of those ballet flats. It is wonderful that you like to blend in and I would be chuffed if people started thinking I were a local too.
Depending on the location I like to blend in too but it also depends on the reason for travel. So if it's a wedding then I just pack the outfits or beach holiday then casual and laid back clothes.
Ah, my favorite skirt of yours makes another stunning appearance! I love how you've styled this, so classic. The fact that you were asked directions more than once in a place you were visiting speaks volumes!! I can't say that I dress nearly as nice as you do when I'm traveling. While I don't wear yoga pants, I also don't pack elaborate outfits. Its probably something I should work on improving, then again, it'd probably help if I vacationed more often! Practice makes perfect!
You look amazing Cee! I hate being able to pick out travellers based on their style alone. Like c'mon! One of the best compliments my friend and I got while backpacking in Oz/hostel slumming was that we didn't dress at all like typical backpackers. Especially in Europe, I'm conscious of what I wear. The tricky part is finding comfortable yet stylish footwear for walking long distances. I like Cole Haan's collaboration with Nike Air Max. But I can't say I've even ventured into tulle skirt territory; you're my hero for that!
B often gets mistaken for a local, for a different reason – because he usually goes running in foreign cities; people just assume he must know his way around!
They thought you were a local?? That's so cool, that's the best compliment you can get in my opinion.:) Ok, it depends on where you are.:D But you do look like a movie star, as soon as I saw the first photo, I immediately thought of Audrey, cross my heart. You really do look breathtaking and I LOVE this outfit, the skirt especially.
I spent only five days in Italy this time around – it's never enough 🙂 If you're in Rome, I highly recommend Il Gelateria del Teatro for the best gelato, L'Asino d'Oro for what is supposed to be some of the best food in an already incredible food city and Blue Goose for amazing vintage.
Thank-you so much for all of your wonderful comments, mes cheries! xox, Cee
